Garmin Announces The Release of the NEW GTN 650 and GTN 750
The wait is over for the GTN 650 and GTN 750 from Garmin. The panel-mount units are equipped with the latest touchscreens, remote audio control, flight planning and electronic chart capabilities.
The screen area has changed dramatically, in addition to the desktop-like interface. The GTN 650 offers 53 percent more screen area than the GNS 430W and the GTN 750 offers 98 percent more screen area. The larger screen area allows the viewing of the entire charts.
The units also offer enhanced situational awareness. There is a built-in terrain database that shows when the potential conflicts are ahead. The units also allow pilots to fly GPS-guided LPV glidepath approaches down to ILS minimums.
In addition to the wide compatibility with other Garmin products, there is also XM Satellite weather, traffic and lighting available on a moving map. Of course, XM radio is also available.
Gary Kelley, Garmin’s vice president of marketing had this to say about the units. “We’re confident that the GTN series will set a new standard on what avionics for general aviation aircraft should be, just as the GNS 430 and 530 did when they were announced in 1998.”
Congratulations to Ron Butler, Winner Aviation’s Engine Shop Supervisor, for being awarded the Twin Commander Lifetime Achievement Award. Ron was presented this award by Matt Isley, President of Twin Commander Aircraft, LLC, on Friday March 5, 2010. We couldn’t be more proud of Ron and his accomplishments.

With a stroke of the governor's pen on May 16, Nebraska joined a growing list of states proclaiming support for - and recognizing the value of - general aviation, including the jobs and other opportunities flying creates.
AOPA's new television-style webcast, AOPA Live This Week, created by Executive Producer Warren Morningstar and hosted by "AOPA Pilot" Editor in Chief Tom Haines, offers a comprehensive look at the week in general aviation.
Over the last century, general aviation airports have evolved from unpaved strips to a vital network of aviation hubs that contributed $38.8 billion to the economy in 2009, says a new FAA study.
Following several recent incursions into restricted areas in Arizona, AOPA is joining with the Air Force to raise the awareness of pilots of the flight-planning needs, and collision avoidance and situational awareness requirements of flying in or near airspace shared by military and civilian aircraft.
For 30 years, AOPA and airport advocates in Santa Monica, Calif., have worked to defend the city airport from attacks by opponents whose vocal campaigns obscured a lack of voter support for their efforts. Now, a study commissioned by AOPA has shown that most of those voters prefer that the city turn its attention elsewhere.
A final rule still open for comment will codify as regulation a practice already implemented by the FAA: Abbreviated taxi clearances are no longer given.
LightSquared filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 on May 14. The wireless network based on mobile-satellite technology that was found to overpower GPS navigation signals made the filing two weeks after it negotiated an extension for making a payment on its debt.
After a mandate from Congress last year, the FAA had to reverse a policy of publicly disseminating private aircraft flight data; now it is going a step further by publishing new procedures that would give owners and operators broader control over their flight information's disclosure. The agency will accept comments on its notice of proposed process until June 8.
The proposed modification of a military operations area (MOA) straddling portions of western Kansas and eastern Colorado should be further refined to reduce the impact on general aviation, AOPA said, urging members to submit comments on the plan by May 30.
The adverse effects of 52 wind turbines on the Kessel VOR-DME in West Virginia do not justify decommissioning the navaid and weakening the area's aviation infrastructure, AOPA said.
